Certain pieces are classics that tend to last, but men need to keep updating their wardrobes in general. Fashion trend changes are generally pretty subtle. For example, denim is getting slimmer. The secret is out: there are jaw-dropping deals to be had at the thrift store! Even women who previously shunned the idea of wearing "someone else's clothing" are scouring their local Salvation Armies and Goodwills for designer bargains. But while thrift stores have piles of high quality used clothing at rock-bottom prices, there are also plenty of pitfalls to be found.

"Grant me the wisdom to change what I can, the serenity to accept what I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference." Whoever said that must have been a thrift-store fashionista! Here are some things to bear in mind when searching for secondhand steals, to avoid making someone else's headache your own:

Know your fabrics. There are two kinds of fiber: natural and synthetic. Many garments include both, in proportions stated on the label.

Natural fibers are, well, natural in origin: cotton, wool, silk, and linen are among the more commonly found ones. Their porous nature makes them absorbent, so they retain stains but also accept dye well. Natural fabrics tend to be wrinkly and are prone to shrink when washed or dried with heat.

Synthetic fibers are made of extruded plastic (!) and include fleece, acrylic, nylon, and polyester. These nonporous fibers usually need little or no ironing and do not shrink. With wear, synthetic knits (acrylic, for example) often develop those insidious little fuzzy balls called "pills" - an effective lint remover (or "pill shaver," as I like to call it) is an excellent investment to prolong the life of your knits.

Beware of the insidious "Dry clean only" tag unless you're okay with paying more to clean your clothes than you did to purchase them. Coats and jackets are an exception to this rule if your savings exceed the cost of dry cleaning. These items are almost always "Dry clean only," but shouldn't require frequent cleaning anyway.

Know the signs. When you find an item you like, examine it carefully for flaws and signs of wear. Some of can be fixed and some cannot. It's a good idea to know the return policy anywhere you shop.

Stains are the #1 reason for good clothes gone bad. Sometimes they can be cut off, i.e. pantlegs can be cut into shorts, long sleeves can be cut to mid- or short-sleeve length. (If you plan to do this, fold the item while trying it on, to get an idea of how it will look. Make sure it covers all of your assets, so to speak.)

Stains can also be disguised with an applique, patch pocket, or other creative additions. Check your local craft or fabric store for iron-ons, or use your computer to print your own personalized iron-on designs.

Some things gain character as they soften with age and wear; denim and leather come to mind. Pair them with newer pieces for wearability. For example, a crisp button-up or T-shirt is right at home under a vintage jacket or sweater. The latest skinny-leg jeans are perfect with a hot pair of vintage boots. How about a great-fitting pair of vintage jeans topped with an elegant wool or tweed jacket? Any thrift-store fashionista would be well-served to cultivate an appreciation for the vintage/distressed look.

Know when to hold 'em. Check zippers, snap snaps. Broken zippers, snaps, and grommets are tough fixes. Check wool for moth holes by holding it up to the light. Fabric that is ripped or worn away offers little foundation for lasting repair. And if clothing could be un-shrunk...well, a dime for every teensy cotton shirt or miniature wool sweater would be quite a fortune!

Buttons, on the other hand, are easy to remove and replace, so long as the fabric and buttonholes are in good shape. Check inside seams for extra buttons included by the manufacturer, or stop by the craft/sewing store on your way home and pick up some fancy ones. Tip: when you wear out clothing with attractive buttons, cut the buttons off and reuse them to dress up secondhand finds.

Be creative with your fixes! Replace a missing snap with a bow, bead or pin. Check out the jewelry case for interesting brooches or beads that can be reused. Ribbons and trims are inexpensive and available in a wide variety of colors and textures at fabric and craft stores. Use your imagination and work with the character of the piece to make it reflect your unique style!

The item may need a cool wash, several items say 30oC, nowadays - will you have a full machine of such items? Ignoring this advice is likely to prove disastrous. There was something to be said about heading home from a long shopping session with arms full of bags that I found hard to explain. Maybe the words I was looking for were anticipation or perhaps excitement.

If I did start to feel that sense of satisfaction, I'd know I'd bought myself some great clothes, some really classy clothes and clothes that looked set to become firm favourites.

When you are in the actual shop, you don't really get an inkling of these things because there are just too many distractions, but at home and worn with attitude, your purchase of regular or perhaps interesting clothes, have the ability to become a purchase of great clothes. I suppose it's fair to say that you do lose part of the buzz if you choose to shop for your clothes online, but the more I shop online, the more I'm inclined to forego the smell of the high street hunt in my nostrils in favour of the massive choice online.

I just couldn't decide between the flat version and the block heeled version, so I got both to settle my mind. I can't say that I have worn either of them more than twice but they sure do look pretty sitting in my antique oak wardrobe.

This season it is the gladiator platform sandal, specifically the new Gucci snakeskin effect gladiator heels with the chunky gold zip up the front. Ahhh! The clothes make the man or so the saying goes. Regardless of your gender, there is some truth to the cliché. If you want to be a success, you need to dress for it. Here are some basics to keep in mind.

Dressing for success really begins with color. Choose two, basic, colors that you can start to build your clothing selection upon. Most people choose black, brown, grey, navy or beige, but you can decide upon whatever color you like the best (just keep it simple). After you have chosen two simple colors, you can then head out (don't forget that wallet!) to those glistening retail stores.

Once you arrive inside of your favorite clothing store, stop for a moment and look around you. You will notice that there are two types of clothes hanging on racks and folded upon shelves - classic and trendy. For the most part, it is best to begin your wardrobe with some classic pieces, so skip those brightly colored, slightly bizarre, trendy looks. Instead, search for pin stripes, basic cuts, and straight lines. Now that you have chosen your everyday pieces, you can start searching for a bit of color.

Although it is okay to incorporate a bit of color into your closet, stick to those previously mentioned classic looks. Do not choose colors that will wash out your skin tone, and try to stay away from colors that are loud and slightly strange. Instead, choose a lot of basic white shirts (technically, white isn't a color, but it is quite useful), and some classic reds, blues, and greens. Basic wardrobe planning does leave room for a bit of avante garde style, just don't spend too much on those trendier pieces.

If you cannot live without the latest style, search for these pieces on sales racks. Paying top dollar for a trend that will not last very long is somewhat useless. Instead, look for things that can really appeal to your fashionista side, but don't fork over a lot of money. You can easily find a lot of great new tops and bottoms on sale racks, you just have to do a bit of digging.

Even if you have never been a great shopper before, applying these easy style tips will be easy. Basic wardrobe planning is really all about rounding out your entire fashion look, which should be a fun task. Take the time to decide upon those three basic colors, and then start shopping to your heart's content. You don't have to be a celebrity stylist in order to whip up the perfect wardrobe, all you need is a bit of encouragement and a lot of good old fashioned know how.

LeSportsac and Tokidoki

The Cactus Friends, the Moofia, Adios & Ciao Ciao! If you have any idea what I am talking about, it may be due to LeSportsac.

LeSportsac got its start as a small fashion bag company in 1974. It was popular throughout the 70's and part of the 80's but mellowed out for a while until its comeback in the early 2000's. In 2001, the co-owner of LeSportsac, Timothy Schifter, announced that the company would be making some changes. Instead of concentrating on the 35+ age group, the company began designing fashion bags for the younger crowd. This decision has led LeSportsac into the heart of pop culture territory. The company now has a line labeled by Gwen Stefani and LeSportsac bags have even been seen adorning fashionable Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) on the popular HBO series Sex in the City.

This comeback may have been right on-time. In 2003 an Italian artist named Simone Legno was discovered and entered into a collaboration with the co-founder of the Hard Candy cosmetics company, Pooneh Mohajer, and her husband, Ivan Arnold. Several other collaborations followed but despite the variety of Tokidoki items, until recently many fans only knew Simone Legno's art through fashion bags made by LeSportSac.

The fashion bag company began producing Tokidoki merchandise in 2006 and since then Tokidoki art is quickly moving into the center of pop culture.

The Tokidoki-LeSportsac collaboration has proven to be so successful that the fashion bags have been known to sell for up to four times their retail value on E-bay. There are even issues with faux Tokidoki fashion bags being passed off as the real thing. This problem is so bad that in 2007 a blog was created by Tokidoki to help consumers avoid purchasing a reproduction.

The cute Tokidoki art is not the only thing that has made this particular LeSportsac line so popular. Each bag comes with a Tokidoki character keychain called a Qee. These keychains have become a favorite collector's item among Tokidoki fans.

Fans are now awaiting the new Tokidoki bags for 2008. LeSportsac is going to remove their label from the bags and they will be branded as Tokidoki only. These new bags will be available in 8 styles. There will be 4 new prints for 2008: a fun print featuring carnival foods called Carnival, Eco-Mondo - a print for lovers of the environment, a punk motif called Concerto Punk, and the last will be a plain black design featuring Adios, Fantasmino, and Nana on the lining.

It is amazing what the right collaboration can do for the fashion world and for those involved. Now, the Cactus Friends, a group of very prickly anime-style cartoons wearing cactus costumes in order to protect themselves from the cruelty of the world, the Moofia, a cute but fierce variety of cartoons representing the different types of milk that are consumed throughout the world, and Adios, the Grim-reaper, along with his girlfriend, Ciao Ciao, are becoming household names. The heart and cross-bones and other Tokidoki depictions have become everyday sights. Due to a series of collaborations, Tokidoki items now range from apparel to footwear and from toys to sporting goods.

Fashion Accessory - Women's Gold Jewellery

Everywhere this year you will see shops displaying large chunky over-the-top gold jewellery, gold chains and cocktail rings with massive settings.

I took this photograph in Prague this summer outside a jeweller's shop just off the Charles Bridge in Prague city.

The Czech state is famed for its Bohemian garnet jewellery. Some of the gemstone settings are beautiful and some are pure kitsch, but I was struck by this central garnet encrusted torque.

The estate jewellery on display was magnificent and full of over the top fashion accessories encrusted and studded with garnet gems set in gold.

Garnet gems are perfect to bring out tones of red - one of the season's hottest colours for fall. You can read more about red fashion trends on the Lady in Red page.

This, jeweller's window and many others like it were set ablaze with over the top opulence. Remember just one of these ornate necklaces is enough. I am very fond of this deep torque example encrusted with red garnets and shown to the right.

How I wish I had gone in to examine the red garnets more closely and to try this piece on. Now I wonder how I resisted going in to take that closer look.

Frida Giannini never stops finding inspiration in her hometown, Rome—some one should give that girl the keys to the city. For her latest men's collection, she'd been spending time at the legendary film studio Cinecittà, looking at fifties-era photos of actors like Marcello Mastroianni in their white suits and piqué polo shirts. But sportswear as we understand it now didn't exist in Italy then, so, to bring things up to this century, Giannini also drew on the boys the Romans call adorable caniglia, who twist tradition with a little sartorial eccentricity. Then, to add some unambiguously masculine spice, she injected a dash of speed demon Steve McQueen in the form of aerodynamic biker jackets and pants.

Giannini's recipe needed that weight because, in the end, what really stood out was her own playful Gucci-lite sensibility: leather jackets in silver, white, butter yellow, or lacquered black paired with skinny trousers in bold checks or bright colors, which had an almost cartoonish flair that evoked the eighties. Also echoing that decade was the new-wave smartness of a check suit, striped shirt, and spotted tie combination (the effect was compounded by the soft, Capezio-like shoes in white or silver). Giannini claimed the checks actually came from her research into the fifties at Cinecittà, but it was men she was looking at in those old photos, and it's boys she's dressing when she matches Mastroianni's smart checks with a green suede baseball jacket. Though the look still has its charms, it might be time to move on up.

What is a fashion icon, well it is a person who is looked upon by others as being most fashionable in the way they dress to impress and present themselves in the latest trendy designer gear. A fashion icon regardless of how they feel, will, 24 hours a day, dress up to the nines to uphold the title they have been labeled with. An avid follower of fashion will normally duplicate what their favorite celebrity is wearing, therefore, choosing to ignore what is more ideally suited to their own image and budget. Duplication in the form of replicating what your idol is wearing, should only be copied if the boot fits so as to speak i.e. shape and size

Italy and Fashion have a very unique and special relationship, and when you consider such names as Dolce&Gabbana, Versace and Armani, to name but a few, it's not difficult to see why. But if we look back into the history of Italian Fashion, (e.g. see also the article on Nina Ricci) we start to understand what gave Italy such a status in the Fashion World.

Count Giorgini started the 'Italian Fashion' craze in 1951, when he organised a fashion show to be presented to an International audience in Florence. He then continued to present other fashion shows at his palace, presenting new collections modelled by nobilty against a backdrop of fine arts and scenery. Nobilty would also model new collections at museums or exhibitions next to famous pieces of fine art. This all contributed to elevating the status of Italian fashion, and implanting in everyone's minds that Italian fashion gives you status, is very rich in quality,and almost 'fairytale' like.

TIE STRAP: A relatively new accessory which is slipped through the back of the tie through the label loop then buttoning it above and below. They are usually made of cloth or plastic.
TIE TACK: Also known as a tie pin, this utensil resembles a studded earring with a chain attached to a long, cylindrical piece of metal or weight. The pin is detached from its base and placed through the material of the tie and then reattached to the base. The weight is then slid through a buttonhole, which keeps the tie in place.

It's a matter of preference which instrument each person uses but one thing to remember with tie pins is that they tend to damage the silk tie cloth when piercing them. When shopping for tie clips, be sure to choose the correct widths and materials to complement your tie collection.

Many people are of the opinion that faux fur coats are rather gaudy, but personally I happen to think that if done properly they can look fantastic. The great thing about a faux fur coat is that you can get it in any style of animal that you want. You couldn't get a real tiger coat, but a tiger faux fur coat? I own several of these exotic coats and I love them. The field the soft ground for is really unparalleled and the imitation of the animals coloring and patterns makes a quality faux fur coat the fun thing to wear.

Of course a lot of my friends have a good chuckle over my choices of faux fur coats. “You are a successful business woman,” they say, “what are you wearing and not God when he could actually be wearing the real thing?” “No chance,” I reply, and I proceed to tell them about why I have a love affair with my faux fur coat. What is tacky isn't wearing a faux fur coat, it is, in my estimation, sporting something barbaric, cruel, and absurdly expensive on my back when the imitations are so clever as to be almost as good as the original.

Not to mention are just as warm and comfortable as the real thing. A fur coat only tells someone that you are rich, something which I don't particularly care to broadcast to the world. I'm not quite that insecure. A faux fur coat tells people that you are a creature of unique and individual tastes who refuses to follow convention. That's what I would like the world to know about me

I have been queried, because I like faux fur coats so much, if there are any other synthetic material is a prefer used over their natural counterparts. While I do confess a certain fondness for pleather, in that case it is usually far superior in my estimation to deal with the authentic article. For starters, I don't feel anywhere near as guilty buying leather as I would if I bought fur.

While only one cow was slaughtered to make my leather jacket, dozens of poor adorable little rabbits would have to give their lives to make one actual rabbit fur coat. I don't know that is fair or even make sense, but either way that's how I feel. I guess it's probably not so fair for the cow.

Besides that, leather is much softer and suppler than pleather. Although a faux fur coat is often as smooth and pleasant as real fur without the possibility of allergens, between pleather and good leather, there is scarcely more than a similarity. Others actually pretty basic that you prefer it to be either black or brown. It comes from a single animal, and in only a select few colors, so there is no sense in getting pleather in something along the lines of a zebra pattern. Now that's tacky.

LIMA — From the book worm to the fashion conscious, The Lima News has scoured the malls to find the latest fashions to make everyone look trendy when they get ready to go back to school later this month.

Bermuda shorts, vintage T-shirts and flip flops are some of the items that are in for young men this fall over at Aeropostale in the Lima Mall.

Young women will be wearing short jean skirts, leggings, layered shirts and long beaded necklaces to stay in tune with this fall’s trends.

If teens are looking for name brand bargains, then TJ Maxx is your store. Laura Totten, spokeswoman for the store shirtdresses, long sweaters over leggings and skinny jeans will be the look for the fall for young women. Cargo shorts and logo T-shirts are also slated to be in this fall for young men. Messenger bags will be the must-have accessory to haul books and classroom essentials.

'Pirates of the Caribbean' Inspires Latest Fashion Craze

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is the blockbuster hit of the summer, but it's not only raking in box office booty, it's also kicking off the latest fashion craze. Celebrity stylist Jennifer Dorogi took "Extra" shopping in Los Angeles, and she gave us the lowdown on the must-have loot. Skull and crossbones are everywhere this season, from a $4,500 Judith Leiber bag to a silk scarf by London's bad boy of fashion, Alexander McQueen.

"It's on Sienna Miller, it's on Lindsay Lohan, and it's sold out everywhere, and you can't get it," Jennifer said. But, if these treasures are out of your swashbuckling reach, there is something for every budget. "Anything from scarves and hats to boxers, t-shirts, there's so much out there right now," Jennifer said. Also hot for everyone is a pirate's favorite: gold, gold, gold!

"Gold accessories are definitely key in this look and lots of layering of gold pieces," Jennifer said. Pirate-inspired hairclips, belt buckles and charms are a must. But for a more modern day look, "Go for some sexy high black boots," she said.Most importantly, "Do one or two pieces, not an entire outfit," Jennifer warned. "You don't want to look like a deck hand."
