Ho Ho Ho! Its Off to London For Xmas Shopping We Go

Today sees the opening of the biggest shopping mall in Europe, The Westfield. Located in West London it has all the high street shops plus an area called The Village with top designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior and Mulberry. Costing £1.6Billion $1.06Billion, it is huge,a large airy space with unusual brands like the Italian must-have shirt company Nara Camiche.

The plunging pound means that London is now the bargain capital of Europe for designer clothes. Catwalk clothes and accessories are 30% cheaper than in Milan or Paris. For example D&G Lily bag is £695 equivalent to E958 in London compared to E1,190 in Continental Europe and $465. Burberry high-waisted flares are £350, E550 compared to $233.

The dramatic weakening of the pound against the dollar means that London hotels are reporting a large increase in American visitors booking for Xmas shopping. The pound is at its lowest rate for the last 5 years. Online retailers report that in October orders from Americans have doubled. As a Stylist my diary is now being booked for Personal Shopping by Americans for Xmas and January Sales as affluent shoppers are prepared to travel to get a great price for their luxury goods.

The department store Selfridges reported a 20% increase in European visitors last month alone. Summer produced an 83% increase in shoppers from United Arab Emirates. All summer I had clients from here and also Dubai.

Kate Moss has this week launched a range for Top Shop which is a high street marque. This is a vintage inspired Christmas Collection ranging from £65, or $43 for a rock-chic triangle rock dress to £400, or $266 for a navy long evening dress. This is seriously cheap and seriously chic.

The European trend of recent years of visiting New York to snap up clothes, shoes and designer bags at half price is set to be reversed as London becomes the new Bargain Designer Capital.

The Politically Incorrect Tee

There are political Tees, (to make a statement about the environment, democracy, freedom, war and peace or the electoral candidate you wish to support) and then there is the politically incorrect T shirt design which could be a rude T shirt, a funny T shirt, or just an offensive T shirt. Everyone wants to make a statement of some sort: teens do it to express rebellion and to be non conformist, a recently divorced man wants to make an anti feminist statement, etc. Sometimes you just want to make a politically incorrect statement for the heck of it; it can be a bit bugging that everyone around is so politically correct, everyone is so concerned about treading on any tender toes and is so busy minding their P's and Q's, they forget to laugh at themselves!

Witness how people refrain from calling a spade a spade: you can no longer call a retarded person by that term, you can only say that so and so is 'special' or 'intellectually challenged' or use similar polite and inoffensive terms. It is perhaps as a backlash to all this forced politeness that tee shirt designs such as this came to be: Arguing with you is like running a race in the Special Olympics, you might win but in the end you are still a retard!

Some environmentalist and conservationists can rather belabor a point to an extent that it can be tiresome; a lot of them do tend to take themselves and their cause rather too seriously. There is therefore that temptation to mock a person who takes themselves that seriously. So a T shirt design, featuring a leaping dolphin with the words, Dolphins taste like Tuna would effectively make the statement that someone is being rather tediously overzealous about their dolphin conservation program.

A newly divorced man can get away with making an anti-wife statement like I got this shirt for my wife (Awesome Trade) but I really doubt if a married man would be permitted to don a T shirt that said something like this!

You can even make a statement that shows how fed up you are with every one being Oh - so - politically correct. Wear a tee shirt design that proclaims, quite simply, or perhaps issues a warning: I am NOT Politically correct or wear one that says Why be Politically Correct when you can Right! Then there are those tee shirt designs which basically tell people not to be too sensitive: FREEDOM I have the right to Free Speech, You have the right to be offended! We both get what we want!

Actually when one is faced by humor in the form of funny T shirts one cannot remain on their high horse without appearing churlish and is forced to unbend a little. So you can design your own T shirt, be it funny or be it any other kind to make your own personal statement. Design a T shirt contests permit you to be as creative and as politically incorrect as you may desire! So go ahead and design a T shirt!

There is an ongoing tshirt contest held at InkFruit. Send in your tee shirt design and become famous! You can also buy great graphic tees at InkFruit.

Great Clothes Make You Feel, Well, Great!

There was something to be said about heading home from a long shopping session with arms full of bags that I found hard to explain. Maybe the words I was looking for were anticipation or perhaps excitement.

I suppose these words only come into play when I knew I'd bought something that pushed all of the right buttons in terms of, it looked fantastic, it felt fantastic (for the brief moment I tried it on), and it was a fantastic price into the bargain. I only got this excited by great clothes and yes, all in all I suppose the right words were both anticipation and excitement.

Once home, the aches and pains were quickly forgotten in a mad dash to the nearest room with a mirror. Once my new purchase was back on, this time for as long as I liked, I'd wait to see if a true sense of satisfaction started to sink in. If I did start to feel that sense of satisfaction, I'd know I'd bought myself some great clothes, some really classy clothes and clothes that looked set to become firm favourites.

When you are in the actual shop, you don't really get an inkling of these things because there are just too many distractions, but at home and worn with attitude, your purchase of regular or perhaps interesting clothes, have the ability to become a purchase of great clothes. I suppose it's fair to say that you do lose part of the buzz if you choose to shop for your clothes online, but the more I shop online, the more I'm inclined to forego the smell of the high street hunt in my nostrils in favour of the massive choice online.

I even believe it's possible to experience a similar level of excitement shopping online, especially during the sales. I probably find shopping online more rewarding, knowing that once I've clicked and paid, it's mine. Any high street sale carries no such guarantee. You queue for hours only to get involved in a crazy, undignified rush for the bargains, with the prospect of being manhandled out of the frame at the last minute.

No, my mind has been changed over the last couple of years and because of the massive choice, the huge competition and the dignified manner in which I can shop, I prove to myself regularly that it is entirely possible to satisfy my desire for great clothes online.

Ultimately the choice is yours, but being the owner of a full wardrobe of really great clothes which when worn, make me feel just great, bought mainly on the Internet, and without any great loss of excitement or anticipation, I'm more than happy to describe myself as an online convert.

Wherever you shop, happy shopping.
